About Lewis and Clark
Two hundred years ago, the American frontier stretched across wild, uncharted territory. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were charged to explore it, investigating the possibility of an efficient trade route between the Pacific and the Rockies, following the east-flowing Missouri and the west-flowing Columbia. Starting from St. Louis on Oct. 14, 1803 with a crew of 32 and guide Sacajawea, they covered an incredible 8,000 miles of territory over two years, four months, and nine days. They returned with the news that the Rocky Mountains were broader than expected, and the hoped-for trading route was not possible. But they also brought back tales of spectacular, incredible vistas and great adventure.

About the Massey Lectures

The Massey Lectures are an annual Canadian event of international significance. Sponsored by the University of Toronto's Massey College since 1961, the lectures focus on a political, cultural, or philosophical topic. Distinguished lecturers have included Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Noam Chomsky, Doris Lessing, John Kenneth Galbraith, and Ronald Wright – speaking eloquently on subjects ranging from politics and sociology to progress and what makes us human. The lectures are broadcast each year on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) radio show, Ideas.
