Diane Ackerman writes poetry; she also writes about nature in its various aspects, from penguin chicks to her rose garden. She grew up in New Jersey, attended Penn State, and has an MFA as well as a Ph.D. in English and Comparative Literature (her dissertation topic was "The Metaphysical Mind in Science and Art") from Cornell, where scientist Carl Sagan and poet A. R. Ammons were her advisors. Ackerman has been a recipient of an award from the Academy of American Poets and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Rockefeller Foundation. She met her longtime companion, the novelist Paul West, when she was one of his students at Penn State.
