Peter Mayle is known for talking about three primary things: good food, good wine, and France. The latter serves as the larger context for his notoriety as a travel-writer and connoisseur of gastrointestinal luxuries. After a British birth and rearing, after time served on Madison Avenue as an ad executive, and after a stint as a writer of children's books, Mayle and his wife made Provence their home and the epicenter from which his tomes on good living have sprung. First inspired to investigate the culture of Provence by an M.F.K. Fisher book picked up while he was living in Britain, Mayle needed little convincing to purchase a home there after his visit to the area in the 1980s. He chronicled the experience of living in Provence for his first book published in 1991, A YEAR IN PROVENCE, that won him international acclaim. Since then, he has produced works of both fiction and nonfiction, all of which focus on the merits of his adopted home.
