Synopsis:

Nathan Zuckerman, now in his early 60s, agrees to write a tribute to the dead father of an old friend and, in researching the man's life, becomes intrigued with the mystery of why someone who seemed to have been blessed in every way--with a happy marriage, successful business, good health--turned into such an intensely bitter and unhappy man during the 1960s. The novel serves as Roth's assessment of the domestic casualties of the Vietnam War.

Book Awards:

Winner of the 1998 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction

Book Reviews:

"A touching creative act."
New York Review of Books - Elizabeth Hardwick (06/12/1997)

"What makes the book difficult and disturbing--what makes it great--is that although the outcome is foreclosed, the moral is not. This is a four-hundred-page novel that ends with a question mark."
New Yorker - Louis Menand (05/19/1997)

Author Bio:

Philip Roth is the son of an insurance manager (Milton Roth, whose life is described in his son's book PATRIMONY) from Newark, New Jersey. He grew up in Newark and earned both critical praise and popular success in 1959 for his first book, GOODBYE, COLUMBUS, a novella and collection of short stories. Since then, Roth has published a number of novels, as well as an autobiography. He has been one of the leading American novelists of the late 20th century, and many of his novels have aroused controversy for their unvarnished, often satirical depictions of Jewish Americans, neurosis, sexual obsession, and the writing life.
