Blindness
Author: José Saramago
Reader: Jonathan Davis

When an epidemic of blindness ravages a city, authorities confine the afflicted to an empty hospital – where criminals soon take over. An eyewitness to this nightmare guides seven strangers out into the barren, looted streets. A magnificent parable of loss and disorientation. By the Nobel laureate. The movie stars Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo. "Chilling... Davis's reading puts his audience in a bright white place, where little is visual save for the listeners' imaginations running wild."—Publishers Weekly   ยป Read More

Synopsis:

In this fable by Nobel Prize winner Jose Saramago, the population of an entire town is suddenly stricken, one by one, with blindness. A "New York Times" Notable Book for 1998.

Author Bio:

Born into a poor family in Azinhaga, near Lisbon, Saramago was raised in the capital city. He studied at the university part-time, supporting himself as a metalworker. His first novel, TERRA DE PECCADO (Country of sin, 1947) was not a success, but its publication enabled Saramago to leave his job and join the staff of a Portuguese literary magazine. A Communist who outspokenly opposed the right-wing dictatorship of Antonio Salazar, Saramago wrote and published journalism, travel books, and poetry, writing fiction again only in 1974 when the Salazar regime fell after a military uprising. He was awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize in literature for "parables sustained by imagination, compassion and irony."
