Author Bio:

Educated at Harvard, Thoreau began as a schoolteacher, but in 1845 he built his cabin at Walden Pond and remained there for more than two years, reading and making the observations on nature and life that would appear in his most well-known book, WALDEN, published in 1854. "Civil Disobedience," the essay Thoreau wrote in 1849, in which he justifies his decision to go to jail rather than pay a poll tax that supported the Mexican War, influenced both Gandhi and Martin Luther King. Before his early death from tuberculosis, Thoreau wrote a number of other works, most of them about the natural world, including A WEEK ON THE CONCORD AND MERRIMACK RIVERS (1849) and THE MAINE WOODS and CAPE COD, both published posthumously. His last words were "moose" and "Indian."
