Synopsis:

Touching factual reminiscences are woven with historical hardboiled fiction in this account of Jackie Robinson's breaking of the color barrier in baseball, written by the author of the bestselling Spenser, PI series. Injured at Guadalcanal and subsequently abandoned by his wife, WWII vet Joseph Burke is suffering from physical and emotional wounds. He gets an unexpected renewed lease on life when he's hired as Jackie Robinson's bodyguard for the black ballplayer's first season with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Interleaved with this fictional account are the author's own memories of being a boy--and devoted Dodgers fan--during the same time period.

Author Bio:

Robert B. Parker is best known for his mystery novels featuring Private Detective Spenser. While investigating homicides and tracking down serial killers, Detective Spenser travels throughout Boston and New England in search of answers. Not surprisingly, Robert Parker has spent most of his life in New England. In 1954, Parker graduated from Colby College in Waterville, Maine. In 1957 he received his master's degree in English from Boston University. In addition to writing mystery novels, Parker has worked as an Army radioman, a technical and advertising writer, and a college English teacher.
