Elvis in the Morning
Author: William F. Buckley, Jr.
Reader: Lloyd James

I'm all shook up in my blue suede shoes... Even as Elvis Presley shoots to fame, fortune, and erratic behavior, he continues a friendship with Orson, a fan and friend since the mid-1950s. Each man is an emblem of his times, as social conventions crumble, and the cultural landscape changes forever. "A charmingly sympathetic tale... surprisingly tender [and a] low-key pleasure.—Publishers Weekly   ยป Read More

Synopsis:

It's the 1950s, and Orson is a young boy living on a U.S. Army base in Germany. Orson's dreary army-brat life takes an unexpectedly delightful turn when he manages to befriend his idol, rock and roll star Elvis Presley, who is stationed at the base. Years pass: Elvis grows ever more decadent and bizarre; and Orson tunes in, turns on, and drops out. But, against the backdrop of cultural upheaval, the unlikely friendship persists.

Author Bio:

William F. Buckley was best known for editing the conservative magazine the National Review, and for hosting the long-running interview show FIRING LINE on public television. He also wrote a syndicated newspaper column, "On the Right." Through this extensive media exposure, Buckley became a public personality who helped make conservatism respectable again after the McCarthy era. Buckley (along with his friend Barry Goldwater) can be credited with paving the way for the election of President Ronald Reagan. Born into a wealthy family--his father had business interests in Mexico and later struck oil--Buckley attended private schools in America and England, and graduated from Yale in 1950. He was on the Yale debate team that bested the Oxford team. His first book, GOD & MAN AT YALE, reflected his disenchantment with the curriculum there. Through all of his pursuits, Buckley raised the bar on discourse both political and personal. Much of his writing is memoir-like in form, consisting of reconstructed journals, and in books on his favorite hobby, sailing--AIRBORNE (1971), ATLANTIC HIGH (1982), and RACING THROUGH PARADISE (1987), among others--Buckley has shown a side of himself that is less snobby and affected than his public persona. NEARER MY GOD (1998), which grew out of an earlier project entitled WHY I AM STILL A CATHOLIC, reflects his lifelong commitment to Catholicism. Buckley was a personal friend and confidante to many of the rich, famous, and powerful, including the Reagans, John Kenneth Galbraith, Vladimir Nabokov, and, of course, Barry Goldwater. In 1965, he ran for mayor of New York City, an experience he wrote about in THE UNMAKING OF A MAYOR. A surprisingly versatile stylist, Buckley wrote a series of popular Cold War thriller/mysteries featuring CIA agent Blackford Oakes. The series' uncanny sense of realism prompted many readers to wonder whether Buckley himself had ever been a CIA agent. Indeed, according to some sources, he was a CIA operative in Mexico in the early '50s. In the year prior to his death, Buckley edited his popular columns from the National Review for the very entertaining CANCEL YOUR OWN GODDAMN SUBSCRIPTION, and collaborated on a study of Barry Goldwater. William F. Buckley generated millions of words, in print and in speech, and though he had many enemies, he had hordes of fans on both sides of the political fence.
