This swashbuckling adventure was the brainchild of the late Marlon Brando, who came up with the storyline in 1979. A collaboration with director Donald Cammell, who wrote a screenplay and later a novel based on the material, FAN-TAN is the story of a brave and dashing sea captain who is seduced into piracy by a beautiful Chinese woman. Set in 1927, the novel is full of carefully researched details about the times. At the age of 62, Cammell committed suicide in 1996; Brando died, age 80, in 2004.
