Author Bio:

Elizabeth George Speare is one of the greatest writers of historical fiction for children and young adults. She attended Smith College for one year and then transferred to Boston University where she received both her bachelor's and master's degrees. She worked as a high school teacher in Massachusetts for several years until she got married and moved to Connecticut. Her first novel, CALICO CAPTIVE, appeared in 1957. The following year she published THE WITCH OF BLACKBIRD POND, which received the Newbery Medal in 1959. Speare won her second Newbery Medal in 1962 for THE BRONZE BOW. A number of years later, her novel THE SIGN OF THE BEAVER was named a Newbery Honor Book. In 1989, Speare won the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award for her body of work.
