Synopsis:

Blending elements of memoir, history, and biography, the best-selling author of A Suitable Boy chronicles the story of Shanti Behari Seth, a young Indian man sent to Germany in the 1930s to study medicine and dentistry and his growing relationship with the woman who would become his wife, Helga Gerda Caro, a young Jewish German. Simultaneous.

Author Bio:

Born in Calcutta, the son of a shoe executive and a judge, Vikram Seth, oldest of three, has a Buddhist brother and a sister in the Austrian diplomatic service. He studied at Oxford (earning degrees in philosophy and economics), and then at Stanford (1977-78), where he intended to continue in economics but ended up a Wallace Stegner Fellow in Creative Writing. For two years after Stanford, he studied Chinese poetry and languages at Nanjing University. During all these years, he wrote poetry, and also began to write novels, and began publishing both in the 1980s. His tour de force, THE GOLDEN GATE, set in San Francisco, combines both his passions: it is a novel composed entirely of 690 rhyming tetrameter sonnets. This was followed by his 1300-page novel, A SUITABLE BOY. In 1992, Seth was commissioned by the English National Opera to write a libretto based on the Greek legend of Arion; the work was also made into a picture book for children and an animated video.
