Synopsis:

In this spymaster's memoir, former CIA director George Tenet describes how the agency operates, in the process providing a unique perspective on the controversy over his role as advisor to President George W. Bush. His analyses have been cited by the Bush White House as crucial insights as to the substance and quality of intelligence relating to Saddam Hussein, and were cited as a basis for the invasion of Iraq in 2003--an invasion that is now seen by many to be undertaken on false premises. Tenet also assesses the agency's antiterrorism efforts before and after 9/11, and expresses his views on the presence of al Qaeda in America and the prospects for future attacks. He endorses the methods that have been used to extract information from suspects such as Khalid Sheikh Mohammed because, he says, they resulted in intelligence that saved American lives, and should not be classified as torture. Tenet is generally positive about President Bush's post-9/11 focus, while bringing to light the squabbling, finger-pointing, and plays for power among many White House higher-ups, including Condoleezza Rice and Dick Cheney. The invasion of Iraq, in his view, resulted from a rush to judgment for which he later paid the price.
