Ernest Hemingway

"The classic Hemingway hero, courting danger to prove himself, obsessed with the fear-courage and tough-tender dialectic, in a sense defined the writer himself." -- The Readers Encyclopedia

In his short stories, novels, and memoirs, Ernest Hemingway changed writing, focusing on the heart and sinew of a man and what it means to be a man. He won the Pulitzer Prize for The Old Man and the Sea, and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. Tragically, he suffered from depression and died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in 1961 at his home in Ketchum, Idaho, at the age of 62.
