Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Birthday Celebration
February 12, 2009, marked Abraham Lincoln’s 200th birthday, and plans for a nationwide bicentennial celebration are underway.
During a ceremony in at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the U.S. Mint unveiled a 2009 commemorative silver dollar embossed with Lincoln’s image and words from his immortal 1863 Address. The Mint will also release four new “tail” designs of the Lincoln penny depicting his birth and early childhood in Kentucky, his formative years in Indiana, his professional life in Illinois, and his presidency in Washington, D.C.
The U.S. Post Office will issue four commemorative stamps honoring Lincoln the Rail Splitter, the Lawyer, the Politician, and the President. (Lincoln already appears on more than 50 U.S. postage stamps, more than any other person.)
A birthday tribute and wreath-laying ceremony will be held on February 12th at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Lincoln’s legacy will also be a part of the historic inauguration of our 44th President as Barack Obama is sworn into office using the same bible that Lincoln used.
And as Publishers Weekly notes, there’s “a whole lotta Lincoln going on” in the audio book world too, as you can see from this list of titles about our 16th President.
We invite you to join the Lincoln Bicentennial Celebration learn more about the man who went from log cabin to Oval Office and continues to inspire us all.
