February 2009 marks the 33rd annual celebration of Black History Month, a time to recognize and consider the achievements and contributions of African-Americans. Black History Month rose out of Black History Week, created by black historian Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson in 1926. He chose February because this month we commemorate the birthdays of two great Americans who aided the cause of freedom: abolitionist Frederick Douglass and President Abraham Lincoln.
