Earth Day 2009
Earth Day is 39
April 22, 2009, marks the 39th anniversary of Earth Day. Senator Gaylord Nelson, the founder of Earth Day, conceived the idea in 1962, deciding that it was time to put environmental issues into the political limelight. But although the nation's citizens were interested, he found that the politicians were not.
But in 1969, at the height of the anti-war movement, Senator Nelson tapped into the energy of the student demonstrations and announced his plans for a nationwide grassroots movement on behalf of the environment. The response was electric, and the first Earth Day, held on April 22, 1970 was a spectacular success.
Since then, Earth Day traditions have become an integral part of the nation's public commitment to protect our planet for generations to come. In 1995, Senator Nelson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his creation of this unique forum for the expression of concern about what is happening to our environment.
