Exciting, mysterious, curious, human: all words that describe history as written by Stephen E. Ambrose. When he wrote, he imagined himself sitting by a campfire, spinning a tale at the end of the day as people leaned forward, eager to hear what happened next. Ambrose's passions ranged from people to places, politicians to battles, but he insisted, "what drives me is curiosity. I want to know how this or that is done: Lewis and Clark getting to the Pacific; the GIs on D-Day; Crazy Horse's victory over Custer at Little Big Horn." Writing, he said, is learning. Listening to Ambrose is learning, too --but it's also entertaining.
Ambrose died Oct. 13, 2002, at age 66, of lung cancer. His final book, To America: Personal Reflections of an Historian, published last November. In it, he extols what makes this country great, and takes issue with those who would denigrate our history and our people. To those familiar with his work, this subject should come as no surprise.
A self-described hero worshipper, this country's "populist historian," Ambrose took history from the book to the screen, both little and big: Band of Brothers became a well-received mini-series on HBO, and he was a consultant on Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan, and on the war documentary Price for Peace, also directed by Spielberg. Ken Burns requested his help as a commentator on the PBS documentary Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery. We at Audio Editions salute Stephen Ambrose. He leaves behind an impressive, exciting body of work.
