An AudioFile Golden Voice. Garrison Keillor's last job interview was in 1969, when he went to work for Minnesota Public Radio. A Prairie Home Companion was born in 1974 as a Saturday afternoon radio show. As an English major at the University of Minnesota, all Keillor wanted was to make a living as a writer, but his current life is not what he meant. He wanted to be a Renaissance man of letters: a poet, novelist, playwright all wrapped into one. Relegated to writing comedy, he finds it's a comfortable place. "In the comedy field," he wrote in the London Times, "you only need a few facts to get you started, and sometimes it helps if you're wrong."
