In 1918 Australia, Tom sets out with his new wife, Isabel, to become the lighthouse keeper on remote Janus Rock. When a boat with a dead man and a living baby wash onshore, grieving, childless Isabel, against Tom's judgment, insists on keeping the child as their own. But two years later, when they return to the mainland, they discover that their choice has had devastating consequences.
