Summary

The adventures begun in Newbery Award-winning Shabanu continue in Haveli, which received the Parent's Choice award in 1993. Shabanu is now 18 and mother of five-year-old Mumtaz. She lives with her husband and his other wives, but her beauty and influence over her husband create jealousy and competition in the large family. There are always "accidents" waiting to happen to anyone who helps her. Shabanu knows that neither she nor her daughter will be safe if anything happens to her husband. When a struggle for power in the family becomes deadly, she must decide if she is willing to defy centuries of Pakistani custom to protect herself and those she loves.
