Fletch - a Character of the 1970s (which is where he belongs)

Be aware that this book is very much of its era (the early 1970s) and that social progression has done it no favours. By today's standards, the hero (or anti-hero) Fletch is an amoral, unethical character, engaging in behaviours that today (at the very least) would be regarded as socially reprehensible. I was hoping that at some point Richard Stark's Parker would enter the scene and just shoot Fletch, as I am sure that by his own curious moral code, Parker would have not put up with Fletch any longer than I did. Perhaps in its day, the Fletch character came across as a "cheeky chappie or "ducker and diver" as we say over here in the UK, but viewed through 2023 moral spectacles (which is perhaps wrong to do, but sometimes difficult to avoid), I just found him to be a thoroughly unpleasant and irritating individual that I found impossible to endure.
The actor and reader, Dan John Miller, was excellent in generating and conveying the different voices.

Gregory Mcdonald (1937–2008) insisted that he was educated while earning his way through Harvard by creating and running an international yacht troubleshooting business. A former Boston Globe reporter, he won two Edgar Allan Poe Awards for his writing as well as numerous awards for humanitarian work.
