William Collins Books and Decca Records are proud to present Argo Classics, a historic catalogue of classic prose and verse read by some of the world’s most renowned voices. Originally released as vinyl records, these expertly remastered stories are now available to download for the first time. All 17 of Shakespeare’s timeless comedies, performed by the celebrated Marlowe Dramatic Society and Professional Players. Young love, bawdiness and exuberance are played out in these comedies that continue to make us laugh and cheer. Performed by an incredible array of the 20th century’s greatest actors, Marlowe alumni including Ian McKellen, Diana Rigg, Derek Jacobi and Prunella Scales can be heard in these recordings. All of the Shakespeare plays within the Argo Classics catalogue are performed by the Marlowe Dramatic Society and Professional Players. The Marlowe was founded in 1907 with a mission to focus on effective delivery of verse, respect the integrity of texts and rescue neglected plays by Shakespeare’s contemporaries and the less performed plays of Shakespeare himself. The Marlowe has performed annually at Cambridge Arts Theatre since its opening in 1936 and continues to produce some of the finest actors of their generations. Thurston Dart, professor of music at London University and a fellow of Jesus College Cambridge, directed the music for this production. This collection includes seventeen comedies: All’s Well That Ends Well, As You Like It, Comedy of Errors, Cymbeline, Love’s Labour’s Lost, Measure for Measure, The Merry Wives of Windsor, The Merchant of Venice, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Much Ado About Nothing, Pericles, Prince of Tyre, The Taming of the Shrew, The Tempest, Troilus and Cressida, Twelfth Night, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, and The Winter’s Tale.

Don't Waste Your Money on This Production

As has been noted on other sites selling the streaming version of this product: these recordings were originally produced on LP records, and the microphones weren't always placed optimally. As a result, expect to have a copy of the text at hand, because there will be passages where the speakers' voices are soft, distant, and unintelligible. (An additional annoyance is the trumpet flourishes that open many acts and scenes: stay near the volume knob, because you'll need to turn it down.)

Unfortunately, no track listing is included, so there's no way to know which play, act, and scene is on which disc—and sometimes a new act begins in the middle of a track.

What's more, from what I can tell, (1) "Pericles, Prince of Tyre" is missing acts 4 and 5, (2) "Love's Labor's Lost" is missing act 5, scene 2, (3) "The Comedy of Errors" is missing act 4, (4) the acts of "Much Ado about Nothing" are arranged in the following order: 4, 5, 3, 1, 2, and (5) "The Comedy of Errors" ends with the end credits for "Cymbeline," and "Cymbeline" ends with the end credits for "The Comedy of Errors."

Five stars for being Shakespeare. Three for the narration (which should be five, but the recording technology just wasn't up to the task). And one for the overall performance, due to the utter uselessness of the packaging and mastering.

Author Bio: William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare (1564–1616), English poet and dramatist of the Elizabethan and early Jacobean period, is the most widely known author in all of English literature and often considered the greatest. He was an active member of a theater company for at least twenty years, during which time he wrote many great plays. Plays were not prized as literature at the time and Shakespeare was not widely read until the middle of the eighteenth century, when a great upsurge of interest in his works began that continues today.
