Summary

Twelve-year-old Rufus Mayflower is a genius at figuring things out. The young African-American boy can draw a map to almost anywhere in Cleveland, make a pattern for saddlebags, and calculate to the penny how much money a project will need. He also has a good sense of what things should cost. So when he is annoyed by the prices in the drugstore, Rufus decides to make his own, less expensive toothpaste. Katy, his best friend, is eager to help him, and it's not long before the two pals are in business. As Rufus and Katy develop a recipe, do taste tests, and put their friends to work packing the toothpaste, a wonderful story of success and friendship unfolds.
